UNFPA FGM Innovation HackLab/ “We Scale” FGM HackLab UNFPA East and Southern Africa Regional Office (ESARO) in partnership with the UNFPA-UNICEF Joint Programme on the Elimination of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and the Spotlight Initiative Africa Regional Programme (SIARP) launched the FGM InnovationHackLab Initiative which aims to involve African young people and African youth organizations in finding innovative solutions to end FGM. RevUp Women by AfriLabs RevUp Women by AfriLabs empowers early-stage women-led African startups and SMEs to overcome unique challenges that hinder their growth and success. Deploying women-targeted tailored initiatives such as peer-to-peer learning and mentoring by female coaches, the initiative aligns with AfriLabs’ inclusion strategy and is funded by Visa Foundation. GREENOVATIONS AFRICA Greenovations aims to set up a framework that brings together actors and stakeholders of the green innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem in Africa to identify and ideate solutions, organize, and support innovators and entrepreneurs, with a focus on women and youth. The project seeks to galvanize women and youth-led green entrepreneurship in Africa by providing the necessary support for business sustainability and growth, brokering relations between women and youth green innovators and potential investors, and by helping to set up conducive business environments and regulatory frameworks through actionable policy recommendations. YouthADAPT Solutions Challenge The Youth Adaptation Solutions Challenge (YouthADAPT Challenge) is an annual competition and awards program for youth-led enterprises (50% women-led) jointly organised by the Global Center on Adaptation (GCA), the African Development Bank (AfDB) and Climate Investment Funds (CIF) as part of the Africa Adaptation Acceleration Program YouthADAPT Flagship Program. This challenge seeks to boost sustainable job creation through support for entrepreneurship and youth-led innovation in climate change adaptation and resilience across Africa. The competition invites young entrepreneurs and Micro, Small, and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs) in Africa to submit innovative solutions and business ideas that can drive climate change adaptation and resilience across Africa. LEAP-RE Programme
LEAP-RE Programme LEAP-RE programme seeks to create a long-term partnership of African and European stakeholders in a quadruple helix approach: government (programme owners and funding agencies), research and academia, private sector, and civil society. The impact will be sought by creating a framework, methodology, and cooperation model. The aim is to reduce fragmentation by aligning existing bilateral and multilateral frameworks. LEAP-RE will establish and jointly implement research, innovation, and capacity-building activities in the renewable energy sector. AU Digital and Innovation Fellowship Program
AU Digital and Innovation Fellowship Program The African Union Digital and Innovation Fellowship Programme is a 12-month programme targeted at identifying and deploying 13 highly competent tech innovators from the African continent to units and organs within the African Union headquarters as resident fellows to understand the system within those units, identify data management challenges within the systems and solve the challenges identified. Features Impact/Result so far The Capacity of 13 fellows has been built via targeted training and study tour. The Internal capacity is enhanced within the African Union and its organs. Closer Ecosystem Relationship: A closer relationship between the African Union Commission (AUC) and the African Innovation Ecosystem with at least three projects/partnerships established. Process: At least one policy and/or participation process enhanced within the context of good governance. 11+ innovative and tailored specific products have been built to enhance the work of the AU and its organs with the engagement of citizens. The African European Digital Innovation Bridge (AEDIB)
The African European Digital Innovation Bridge (AEDIB) AEDIB has the objective to strengthen a common African European digital innovation ecosystem by supporting local digital innovation and startup ecosystems in Africa and facilitating the collaboration between European and African Digital Innovation Hubs. AfriLabs is a member of the African-European Digital Innovation Hub Bridge, a consortium led by GIZ with 13 ecosystem partners across Europe and Africa, playing a major role in building evidence and sustainability of the Digital and Entrepreneurship Skills (DES) Academy programme, which will specifically target the needs of African vulnerable groups in Uganda and Senegal, thereby strengthening the pan-African and African-European digital innovation partnerships as well as synergies between innovation ecosystems in Africa and Europe to widen sustainable impact. Features Impact/Result so far Develop policy co-creation tools and skills for start-ups and entrepreneurs and create online policy dialogues in national innovation networks Address the needs of marginalised youth, women and vulnerable groups by enhancing their inclusion and possibilities in entrepreneurship by raising their digital and entrepreneurship capacities. 3 African Digital Innovation Hubs will be established and operated in the areas of Smart Cities, Climate Smart Agriculture and Digital Trade.
