INTRODUCTION
AfriLabs Background
AfriLabs is a network organization supporting over 500 technology and innovation hubs across 53 African countries. We support the growth of technology hubs and their community to raise high potential entrepreneurs that will stimulate economic growth and social development in Africa. We do this by providing capacity building resources, financing, mentoring and networking opportunities to our network members.
Project Background:
The African Union Digital and Innovation Fellowship Program is a comprehensive initiative aimed at identifying and deploying skilled tech innovators from across Africa to various units and bodies within the African Union Headquarters. These individuals serve as resident fellows, immersing themselves in the operations of the participating units to gain a deep understanding of their systems and processes.
The primary task of the resident fellows is to identify challenges within these systems and processes and propose innovative technological solutions to address them. By collaborating with unit members, the fellows will co-create and develop tailored tech products and processes to enhance the African Union’s mandate, particularly in the areas of good governance and citizen engagement. Throughout the fellowship, participants will be strategically assigned to different AU units and organs to analyse internal challenges, understand departmental mandates and administrative processes, and devise technology-driven solutions. The program will also facilitate the long-term enhancement of the host African units/organs’ internal capacities.
In summary, the program aims to harness the expertise of young, African tech innovators to drive meaningful improvements within the African Union, fostering innovation, efficiency, and effectiveness in pursuit of its goals.
