WFP Innovation Challenge drives home-grown food systems transformation in South Sudan

WFP Innovation Challenge drives home-grown food systems transformation in South Sudan Juba, SOUTH SUDAN – Eleven ventures in South Sudan have been awarded a total of USD 320,000 in this year’s WFP IGNITE Food Systems Innovation Challenge and an opportunity to contribute towards transforming the country’s food system. Launched earlier this year, the challenge, supported by the Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA) and German Development Bank, KfW is the second edition, following its inaugural event in 2021. Winners receive grant funding ranging from USD 15,000 to USD 40,000, alongside access to expert mentorship, business acceleration, and the chance to establish strategic partnerships. “Building sustainable food systems is the cornerstone of South Sudan’s path to food security, economic sovereignty, and climate resilience,” affirmed Dr. John Ogoto Kanisio, Undersecretary for Agriculture at the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security. “By investing in young, innovative entrepreneurs, we are not only creating jobs, but we are also unlocking rural potential, driving inclusive agribusiness growth, and cultivating a new generation of leaders who will position South Sudan competitively in regional and global markets. The Ministry is fully committed to this vision, and we call on all partners to join us in empowering youth to lead the transformation of our food systems.” The top two winners are Africa Cornerstone General Trading and Dream Farm Agribusiness Cooperative. Both companies are proudly women-led and have demonstrated remarkable commitment to environmental sustainability. Africa Cornerstone General Trading’s innovation centres on bio-degradable and recyclable packaging solutions designed to reduce food waste and lower carbon emissions. Meanwhile, Dream Farm Agribusiness Cooperative has excelled in recycling poultry manure as organic fertiliser, developing sustainable feed solutions, and employing efficient water-saving housing. “The IGNITE Food Systems Challenge shows the power of homegrown solutions by local entrepreneurs,” said Dr. Björn Niere, German Head of Cooperation.“Sustainable food systems need exactly these innovations. They also require strong partnerships, clear standards, and a safe and free environment for ideas to grow. Germany is proud to work with WFP, DANIDA, and local partners to ensure that promising ventures can thrive and have lasting impact on communities.” “Lack of access to finance and technical support is suffocating innovations of South Sudanese young entrepreneurs,” said Adham Effendi, WFP’s Acting Country Director in South Sudan. “Through generous support by DANIDA and KFW, we are reaching bright and talented entrepreneurs to unlock their potential and provide solutions to food systems challenges.” Following a rigorous selection process from over 200 entries received nationwide, the winners represent a diverse range of sectors. These include agri-tech, post-harvest management, livestock production, and sustainable food distribution. The full list of winners is as follows; AgriSmart Farm & Urban Gardens, Golden Farm South Sudan Ltd, Hope and Care for Development, Long Puou Cooperative Society, Lulu Bakes, Mading Chan Young Network Economic Development, Magwi College of Agribusiness & Management Science, National Star Investment Co. Ltd and Tropical Wet Organics Ltd. “This is more than just a recognition of entrepreneurial excellence – it’s a turning point for inclusive, homegrown innovation in South Sudan,” said Nanko Madu, Director of Programmes at AfriLabs. “By backing visionary local businesses, we are not only fuelling sustainable economic growth but also proving that transformative change can and must come from within. These entrepreneurs are the architects of a more food-secure, climate-resilient future for South Sudan.” The challenge is a brainchild of the IGNITE Innovation Hub of the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) and implemented through its partners AfriLabs and Seed Grow South Sudan in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security. IGNITE Food Systems Challenge seeks to find and promote locally driven solutions to food systems challenges. Past winners include Hagana Agro Processing Company, which has since grown into a household brand in South Sudan and competes favourably on regional markets. The session will convene leading accelerators, incubators, and innovation enablers to unpack the vital role that tech hubs play in nurturing early-stage startups, especially in environments marked by limited funding, fragmented infrastructure, and constrained market access. The conversation aims to spotlight how hubs are anchoring Africa’s digital transformation by: Providing startups with access to training, mentorship, and funding opportunities Driving inclusive digital adoption among MSMEs Bridging local entrepreneurs with continental and global markets. Helping startups navigate regulatory hurdles and compliance challenges Promoting inclusive innovation by targeting women- and youth-led businesses. AfriLabs, with its network of over 500 hubs in 53 African countries, plays a critical role in enabling this transformation. AU-EU Innovation Agenda – What This Means for the Continent and Why AfriLabs Is at the Centre of It All

AU-EU Innovation Agenda – What This Means for the Continent and Why AfriLabs Is at the Centre of It All On May 21st, 2025, African and European Ministers gathered in Brussels for the 3rd EU-AU Ministerial Meeting, marking 25 years of a strategic partnership aimed at deepening ties between the continents. While the event touched on several key areas of mutual interest like peace, energy, trade, and education, one statement stood out for the innovation community in Africa: “Ministers took note of the adoption of the AU-EU Innovation Agenda and encouraged researchers and innovators to continue driving their scientific discoveries and innovative solutions for the benefit of sustainable economies and societies.” — Joint Communiqué, Point 15 This single statement, though brief, carries enormous weight. It reaffirms innovation as a central pillar in Africa and Europe’s shared vision for the future and sets the tone for what could be a transformative shift in how innovation ecosystems across Africa are recognized, supported, and scaled. The AU-EU Innovation Agenda is a joint initiative between the African Union and the European Union that aims to foster research and innovation (R&I) in both regions, translating it into tangible socio-economic impact through products, services, businesses, and jobs. Launched in July 2023, the 10-year policy initiative is set to run through 2033. At AfriLabs, this is not just good news—it’s validation, an invitation to further scale our impact. We’ve long championed the power of innovation to reshape Africa’s development trajectory. As the largest network of over 500 innovation hubs across the 53 African countries, we are not only nurturing ideas but actively connecting grassroots innovation to policy and global opportunity. These hubs represent tens of thousands of startups, technologists, and changemakers who are solving real problems in climate resilience, inclusive finance, AI for education, and youth employment. In 2024 alone, AfriLabs community hubs supported over 280,000 innovators, contributing to the mobilization of tens of millions of dollars in early-stage investments across the continent. The AU-EU Innovation Agenda directly aligns with what we do daily: Strengthening research-to-impact pipelines Supporting early-stage and deep-tech innovators Promoting climate-smart and socially driven solutions Facilitating cross-continental collaboration And, crucially, acting as a bridge between African innovation ecosystems and global partners like the EU Innovation to us is a Diplomatic Priority. The inclusion of innovation at the ministerial level signals a policy shift—one where researchers, technologists, and entrepreneurs are not just problem-solvers but key development actors. It’s a clear message: Africa’s future will be built not only in government offices and boardrooms, but also in co-working spaces, tech labs, community hubs, and green innovation centers. What’s different now is that the political signal is stronger than ever. For the first time, African innovators are being formally acknowledged in joint policy declarations as essential contributors to sustainable development. This isn’t just a symbolic nod, it’s a structural shift. The future of Africa won’t be decided in isolation from its innovation ecosystems. It will be co-designed with them, in collaboration with institutions like AfriLabs. This moment also reinforces AfriLabs’ moonshot ambition: to catalyze a $1 trillion digital economy in Africa. This isn’t just a lofty target—it’s a continental imperative. By driving digital innovation across sectors, AfriLabs aims to tackle Africa’s most pressing social, economic, and environmental challenges while unlocking inclusive growth for all. From fintech to agri-tech, health innovation to climate solutions, the digital economy represents Africa’s next great leap and AfriLabs is building the infrastructure, partnerships, and policy environment to make it possible. What’s Next? Nairobi 2025 – Africa’s Innovation Future And as momentum builds from Brussels, all roads now lead to Nairobi, Kenya, where from October 7–9, 2025, AfriLabs will host the AfriLabs Annual Gathering 2025, themed Africa’s Innovation Future: Policy, Partnerships, and Progress. The Gathering will bring together policymakers, government leaders, development partners, researchers, hubs, entrepreneurs, investors, innovators and multilateral institutions to translate the AU-EU Innovation Agenda from a declaration into implementation. It’s where frameworks will meet funding, and bold ideas will find the support to scale across borders. The gathering will provide a platform to explore: How Africa can shape and implement innovation-friendly policies What strategic partnerships are needed to fuel innovation at scale How to measure real progress and inclusive impact across sectors This is the platform where the next phase of Africa’s innovation narrative will unfold with shared lessons, continental ambitions, and global partnerships. Whether it’s building AI governance frameworks, advancing the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) through digital commerce, or boosting youth innovation, Nairobi 2025 will be a defining moment. And importantly, how African innovators can lead—not follow—on the global innovation stage. A Call to Innovators, Policymakers, and Partners The AU-EU Innovation Agenda is a blueprint—but we must bring it to life. AfriLabs is ready to lead, convene, and co-create the future of innovation on the continent. If you’re an innovator, we’re your community. If you’re a policymaker, we’re your ally. If you’re a partner, we’re your gateway to grassroots impact. Because Africa’s innovation future is not a possibility. It’s already unfolding and AfriLabs is proud to be at the heart of it. Empowering Survivors, Transforming Communities: Samuel’s Mission to End FGM in Africa with SmartRR

Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), a term that echoes with the pain and resilience of survivors, is a haunting reality that demands our attention and collective commitment to bring about change. Samuel, a computer scientist, has been the driving force behind an innovative solution to combat FGM in Africa. His journey, fueled by the values instilled in him during his childhood, has resulted in the creation of SmartRR, an application that not only connects survivors of FGM with medical professionals but also fosters a supportive community that transcends borders. Samuel’s formative years were shaped by a mother who instilled in him the importance of empathy and the duty to protect his siblings, especially his sisters. This upbringing laid the foundation for Samuel’s dedication to safeguarding women. As he delved into computer science during his studies, he discovered a potent tool to address societal issues. Samuel found himself drawn to leveraging his skills to protect women, a cause that had been close to his heart since childhood. The pivotal moment for SmartRR came with Samuel’s participation in the UNFPA pitch competition in 2022, where his innovative solution emerged victorious. The subsequent seed funding enabled the integration of features like an anonymous chat box, allowing users to share their stories and seek assistance. What started with a mere 300 cases before the funding has now grown to over 1,200 reported cases, reaching even those with disabilities who utilize the platform to request support. SmartRR serves as a lifeline for FGM survivors. The application links survivors with service providers, primarily medical doctors, who offer virtual consultations. The anonymity of these consultations provides a safe space for survivors to seek help comfortably. Samuel’s collaboration with AfriLabs and UNFPA under the UNFPA Incubation Programme (Innovating solutions against SGBV, FGM and Climate Action 2021 – 2022) has significantly expanded the reach of SmartRR, with over 7,523 users and 1,200 cases reported. The impact of SmartRR extends beyond numbers; it resonates in the positive changes observed in communities heavily affected by FGM. In the North East of Nigeria, FGM cases have declined. However, cases of FGM in the North Western part of Nigeria are prevalent, and Samuel’s engagement with partners such as UNFPA and AfriLabs has allowed and aided the reach in the North Western region. Samuel narrates compelling stories that illuminate the transformative power of SmartRR. One service provider, donned in a T-shirt advocating against FGM, initiated a conversation in a salon that led to a profound change of heart for a woman contemplating the procedure. Another instance involves a 22-year-old rape victim who was ashamed to tell her friends or family members and even contemplated suicide, but upon discovering SmartRR, found the necessary support and solace to carry on. Angela Felix (Note: The name “Angela Felix” is fictional and used to protect the identity of the individual.), recounting her experience, expressed gratitude for the app’s discreet and rapid assistance, saying, “Two things which made the app stand out to me is the anonymity it provides and how quickly my case was attended to.” Her journey of healing and resilience serves as a powerful testament to the impact of SmartRR in providing crucial support to survivors. (Watch the full story here, as featured in Voice of America News, 2021). SmartRR’s impact on communities affected by FGM is nothing short of extraordinary. Samuel’s commitment, coupled with the support from AfriLabs and UNFPA, has not only elevated SmartRR but has also empowered survivors, changed hearts, and transformed communities. Through technology, empathy, and determination, Samuel is leading a revolution against FGM, one virtual consultation at a time.
