AfriLabs joins the Smart Africa Alliance
AfriLabs, the largest Pan-African network of technology and innovation hubs has joined the Smart Africa Alliance in a partnership aimed at guiding and advancing the basic framework to develop the startup ecosystems across the continent. As an international non-profit organisation with the Alliance, AfriLabs will closely support the Smart Africa startup and innovation ecosystem initiatives. ICTs, especially startups, can be a considerable lever of action for African States as they can create wealth and jobs; and improve the efficiency and transparency of the administration, as well as access to basic social services. As part of its mission to accelerate sustainable socio-economic development on the continent, the Smart Africa Alliance has pledged to develop a master plan for an ecosystem of startups and innovation in Africa in order to support the efforts to update existing policy frameworks in many countries in the continent. This is also part of its flagship projects. Together with AfriLabs, the Smart Africa Alliance aims to guide and develop the basic framework to develop startup ecosystems across the continent. “Innovation and startup ecosystems form a key component of our vision to build a single digital market in Africa. Therefore, welcoming AfriLabs to the alliance is naturally aligned with our objectives and I have no doubt, the Pan-African network for innovation hubs will bring their expertise and experience to sustain our ambition” emphasized Mr. Lacina Koné, CEO/Director General, Smart Africa Secretariat.” “AfriLabs remains committed to supporting the African innovation ecosystem and we are always happy to collaborate with organisations whose vision aligns with ours. AfriLabs and Make-IT in Africa set to foster Intra-Africa collaboration, connectivity and innovation at the 2022 AfriLabs Annual Gathering
AfriLabs and Make-IT in Africa are set to foster intra-Africa collaboration, connectivity and innovation at the 2022 AfriLabs Annual Gathering (AAG). The 2022 AAG, with the theme “Intra-Africa Connectivity, Collaboration and Innovation,” will be held from the 26th to 28th October 2022 at CIELA Resort & Spa, Ngwerere Road, Bonanza Estate, Lusaka, Zambia. AfriLabs and Make-IT in Africa have worked together successfully since 2019 to support local partners in laying solid foundations for robust and resilient innovation ecosystems. In the last decade, AfriLabs has provided a platform for dialogue amongst all stakeholders in the African innovation and technology ecosystem and beyond the continent. Among the ways in which this has been implemented are interventions to empower innovation hubs and support entrepreneurs, as well as collaborative efforts with pan-African institutions and governments in developing innovative policies, capacity-building programs, innovative financing models for entrepreneurs, and research and development. AAG 2022 promises to be exciting as AfriLabs will be launching several new initiatives birthed from the network. One of these is a Policy Pathways framework that outlines ten (10) innovation policy areas for African Governments to contemplate. The AfriLabs Policy Pathways highlights the voices of innovators, entrepreneurs, and hubs across Africa on the 10 policy priorities all parties (governments, multilateral organizations, development agencies, and private businesses) must address to establish a framework that will foster innovation, entrepreneurship, and the digital economy for job creation, economic growth, and prosperity throughout Africa. Register today at www.afrilabsgathering.com About the AfriLabs Annual Gathering The AAG, AfriLabs flagship event, provides an opportunity for technology hubs within the AfriLabs network and other stakeholders of the African technology and innovation ecosystem to convene, network, learn and share knowledge. These stakeholders include but are not limited to corporates, development agencies, academia and investors. The event was first held in Ghana in 2016, then in Egypt in 2017, Tanzania in 2018, Ethiopia in 2019, online in 2020 and Nigeria in 2021. It has brought together over 1000 key stakeholders of the African technology, innovation, and entrepreneurial ecosystem from the public and private sectors, to network and share knowledge. Zambia won the bid to host the event this year, making it the first country in Southern Africa to have this honour. Summary Of September Activities At Afrilabs
Dear AfriLabbers, September came with lots of opportunities for hubs, businesses and entrepreneurs within and outside the AfriLabs community. Catalytic Africa, a matching fund by the African Business Angels Network (ABAN) and AfriLabs that aims to strengthen African startups, innovation hubs, and angel investors while delivering impact results to institutional funders is still ongoing. Learn more and apply here. As part of our continuous devotion to capacity development, AfriLabs Capacity Building Programme (ACBP) will hold physical workshops in 10 African Countries. The ACBP Physical Workshop will provide the opportunity to network with stakeholders across the African innovation ecosystem, attend the AfriLabs Annual Gathering 2022 and be taught by seasoned ecosystem leaders during the workshop. Application began in September and has closed for hubs in Zambia; other African countries can still apply until 28th October 2022. Learn more and apply here. Global Center on Adaptation, African Development Bank, and Climate Investment Funds launched the second edition of the African Youth Adaptation Solutions #YouthAdapt Challenge, an annual competition and awards program for youth-led enterprises (50% women-led) as part of the Africa Adaptation Acceleration Program YouthADAPT Flagship Program. The competition invites young entrepreneurs and Micro, Small, and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs) in Africa to submit innovative solutions and business ideas that can drive climate change adaptation and resilience across Africa. Selected innovators will receive access to $100,000 each in grants among other benefits. Applications end at 11:59 pm on 4th October 2022. Apply here. The boot camp is a lineup of activities, from capacity-building in business, technical and venture development skills to build from ideation to incubation stage, and connection to resources etc. The programme seeks to support targeted young innovators whose aspiring solutions can make impactful change for girls at risk of early pregnancies and seeks to end Early Pregnancy in East and Southern Africa. To wrap up the month, Series 9 of the hubs learning week was held from 26th to 30th September 2022. It was an insightful week of learning about how to build, manage and grow successful startups. Le Centre mondial sur l’adaptation, la Banque Africaine de Développement et les Fonds d’investissement pour le climat ont lancé la deuxième édition du défi #YouthAdapt Solutions d’adaptation pour les jeunes africains, un concours annuel et un programme de récompenses pour les entreprises dirigées par des jeunes (50 % dirigées par des femmes) dans le cadre de l’Africa Programme d’accélération de l’adaptation Programme phare YouthADAPT. Le concours invite les jeunes entrepreneurs et les micro, petites et moyennes entreprises (MPME) d’Afrique à soumettre des solutions innovantes et des idées commerciales susceptibles de favoriser l’adaptation et la résilience au changement climatique en Afrique. Le camp d’entraînement est une gamme d’activités, du renforcement des capacités en affaires, des compétences techniques et de développement d’entreprise pour passer de l’idéation à l’étape d’incubation, et la connexion aux ressources, etc. Le programme vise à soutenir les jeunes innovateurs ciblés dont les solutions en herbe peuvent apporter un changement percutant pour les filles à risque de grossesses précoces et cherche à mettre fin aux grossesses précoces en Afrique Orientale et Australe. Pour conclure le mois, la série 9 de la Semaine d’Apprentissage des hubs s’est tenue du 26 au 30 Septembre 2022. The AfriLabs Annual Gathering (AAG) has been known to spark collaboration between key players in the African innovation economy, leading to enhanced impact on the continent by all the parties involved. Stakeholders such as hubs, corporates, governments and the like have always reaped huge benefits from this flagship event by the AfriLabs community. For for hubs across Africa, the AAG has been known to facilitate the attainment of organisational goals. One such success story was recorded by TechQuest STEM, Lagos, Nigeria. TechQuest STEM is a non-profit organisation that provides education technology content, resources and tools for the delivery of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), ICT and digital literacy programs to young Africans at scale. Having participated in several impactful programmes offered by AfriLabs including but not limited to AAG 2021, AfriLabs virtual meetups, AfriLabs learning weeks and listening tours, TechQuest STEM has improved its onboarding processes and metrics for evaluating impact while constantly reviewing innovative ways to ensure that a feedback loop is included in their programs. Furthermore, TechQuest STEM participated in the AfriLabs Capacity Building Programme (ACBP) after which the hub recorded the following major achievements: establishing regional and cross-regional collaboration in Africa with other AfriLabs member hubs; increasing its community of mentors across 13 countries to over 90 mentors; impacting over 700 female entrepreneurs (500 in Nigeria and 200 in South Sudan) in the Female Entrepreneur Support Program (FESP), a collaborative initiative by TechQuest STEM Academy and Junub Open Space; and winning one of the AfriLabs virtual meetup grant awards on SDGs and COVID 19 among others. AfriLabs continues to offer a diverse range of impactful products to stakeholders in the African innovation community, and the AAG 2022 is another opportunity that promises to be as loaded as ever.
