We support the growth of technology hubs and their community to raise high potential entrepreneurs that will stimulate economic growth and social development in Africa. We do this by providing capacity building resources, financing, mentoring and networking opportunities to our network members.
About Timbuktoo
Timbuktoo is an ambitious initiative designed to transform the African startup ecosystem by addressing key gaps in innovation, investment, and support systems. With a goal of mobilizing US$ 1 billion in catalytic and commercial capital, Timbuktoo aims to positively impact 100 million livelihoods and create 10 million dignified new jobs across Africa. The initiative operates through three major toolboxes—Unipods, Innovation Hubs, and Catalytic Fund—distributed across eight thematic hubs focused on sectors such as Smart Cities/mobility, Creatives, Greentech, Trade/Logistics/E-commerce, AgriTech, FinTech, and Health Tech.
About the UNDP Timbuktoo Ecosystem Mapping Study
The primary objective of this study is to conduct a comprehensive Pan-African mapping activity, highlighting the various stakeholders; including hubs, investors, startups, and service providers active in different sectors of the Timbuktoo thematic areas. Additionally, the project will cover other significant pillars, such as funds, funds of funds, and university-based Unipods.
Role Overview
We are seeking a Lead Research Expert who will be responsible for leading a comprehensive Pan-African mapping exercise to identify and analyze key stakeholders within the Timbuktoo thematic areas. This includes mapping innovation hubs, startups, investors, service providers, tertiary institutions, and governments across all 54 African countries. The insights gained from this research will inform the strategic direction of Timbuktoo’s thematic hubs, ensuring they are well-positioned to address the needs of the ecosystem and its stakeholders.
Scope of Work

Research Design & Methodology: Develop a robust research framework and methodology for mapping the African Innovation Ecosystem, ensuring comprehensive coverage of all thematic hubs.

Stakeholder Engagement: Identify and engage with key stakeholders across the African continent, including investors, innovation hubs, startups, service providers, and government entities.

Data Collection & Analysis: Collect, organize, and analyze data on the state of the startup ecosystem in Africa. This includes the identification of top-funded startups, innovation centers, and available funding opportunities.

Gap & Opportunity Analysis: Identify gaps, challenges, and opportunities within the ecosystem that Timbuktoo can address through its thematic hubs.

Reporting & Documentation: Prepare detailed reports that provide insights into the ecosystem, including stakeholder mapping, analysis of innovation centers, startups, and investment opportunities.

Collaboration Facilitation: Highlight potential partnerships between stakeholders and facilitate connections to strengthen the innovation ecosystem.

Strategic Recommendations: Provide actionable recommendations based on research findings to inform Timbuktoo’s strategy and initiatives.
Qualifications & Experience

Education: Advanced degree in Business, Economics, Development Studies, or a related field.

Experience:

Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in research, particularly within innovation ecosystems, startup development, or economic development in Africa.

Proven track record of leading large-scale research projects across multiple countries.

Strong knowledge of the African startup ecosystem, including familiarity with key stakeholders and sectors.
