AfriLabs is a network organization supporting over 500 technology and innovation hubs across 53 African countries. We support the growth of technology hubs and their community to raise high potential entrepreneurs that will stimulate economic growth and social development in Africa. We do this by providing capacity building resources, financing, mentoring and networking opportunities to our network members. 

 

About Timbuktoo 

 

Timbuktoo is an ambitious initiative designed to transform the African startup ecosystem by addressing key gaps in innovation, investment, and support systems. With a goal of mobilizing US$ 1 billion in catalytic and commercial capital, Timbuktoo aims to positively impact 100 million livelihoods and create 10 million dignified new jobs across Africa. The initiative operates through three major toolboxes—Unipods, Innovation Hubs, and Catalytic Fund—distributed across eight thematic hubs focused on sectors such as Smart Cities/mobility, Creatives, Greentech, Trade/Logistics/E-commerce, AgriTech, FinTech, and Health Tech. 

 

About the UNDP Timbuktoo Ecosystem Mapping Study 

 

The primary objective of this study is to conduct a comprehensive Pan-African mapping activity, highlighting the various stakeholders; including hubs, investors, startups, and service providers active in different sectors of the Timbuktoo thematic areas. Additionally, the project will cover other significant pillars, such as funds, funds of funds, and university-based Unipods. 

 

Role Overview 

We are seeking a Graphic Designer who will be responsible for visually communicating the findings and insights of the Timbuktoo Ecosystem Mapping Project. You will be responsible for creating visually compelling and informative graphics, infographics, reports, that effectively communicate complex information and other visual materials that will support the project’s goals and objectives. 

The ideal candidate will have a passion for visual storytelling, strong understanding of design principles, typography, and layout, as well as the ability to translate data and content into compelling visual elements. 

 

Scope of work: 

 

  1. Collaborate with project stakeholders, including the project team, researchers, data analyst, authors, communications experts, and subject matter experts, to understand the project requirements, goals and objectives of each report. 

  1. Conceptualize and create visual designs for reports, including cover pages, infographics, charts, graphs, and other graphical elements. 

  1. Develop templates and layouts that maintain consistency across multiple reports while adhering to brand guidelines. 

  1. Transform raw data and content into visually appealing and easy-to-understand graphics and illustrations. 

  1. Ensure that all design elements are accurate, error-free, and aligned with the messaging and purpose of the report. 

  1. Incorporate feedback from stakeholders to refine and improve the design of reports throughout the production process. 

  1. Prepare final files for print and/or digital distribution, ensuring that they meet the necessary specifications and quality standards. 

  1. Select appropriate fonts, colors, and images to enhance the overall design of the report 

 

Qualifications and skills: 

 

  • Proven experience as a Graphic Designer, Visual Communication, or a related field with a strong portfolio showcasing report design projects. 

  • Proficiency in graphic design software such as Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign and others). 

  • Solid understanding of typography, color theory, and layout principles. 

  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to maintain accuracy while working with large amounts of data and content. 

  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to effectively interact with cross-functional teams. 

  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment. 

  • Attention to detail and a commitment to producing high-quality work. 

  • Experience working in a corporate or nonprofit environment, designing reports for internal or external stakeholders. 

  • Familiarity with data visualization techniques and tools for creating interactive or dynamic graphics. 

  • Knowledge of print production processes and requirements for designing reports for print publication. 

  • Understanding of accessibility principles and best practices for designing inclusive and accessible reports.

Duration and Remuneration: 

This position is on contract for the duration of the project, expected to be 2 months.  

 

 

Reporting: 

The graphics designer will report directly to the project coordinator and creative lead and work closely with other team members, providing regular updates on the progress of activities and deliverables. 

 

Location: Remote 

Remuneration: $2000
