Intel Launches Second Edition of the Intel Community Reach Program to Bridge Africa’s Digital Divide and Foster AI Innovation Following the resounding success of its inaugural edition, Intel is pleased to announce the launch of the second edition of the Intel Community Reach Program (ICRP)—a transformative initiative aimed at driving digital inclusion and unlocking the power of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and broadband connectivity for underserved communities across Africa. With Africa’s internet penetration at just 38%—far below the global average of 68%—and a stark urban-rural digital divide, Intel CRP 2025 seeks for projects that can enable population in underserved areas (and or communities) in the member states of the African Union to have access to education including in STEM, healthcare, agriculture, environmental services, fintech solutions, or digital skills readiness; for financial, social and tech equity; using Artificial Intelligence (AI) – especially at the Edge with AI PC- and/or broadband connectivity. The program will identify impactful projects and allow them to get our technical, capacity building, and consultancy support. Intel invites organizations, enterprises, startups, SMEs, and institutions that are working towards alleviating social challenges using AI – especially at the Edge with AI PC and/or broadband connectivity to unlock Africa’s enormous digital landscape to apply. The program emphasizes women tech entrepreneurs, reinforcing Intel’s commitment to inclusive digital empowerment. Intel AI Programme Propels African DeepTech Ecosystem Forward: A Collaborative Success The Fraser Suites in Abuja, Nigeria, witnessed an exciting convergence of Africa’s brightest minds and innovative spirit as Intel and AfriLabs successfully concluded the Intel AI Programme for African DeepTech Startups & Ecosystem Stakeholders. From March 5th to 7th, 2024, attendees immersed themselves in a three-day journey of enlightenment, collaboration, and empowerment. The event, organized by AfriLabs in collaboration with Intel, aimed to propel growth and innovation in Nigeria’s DeepTech ecosystem. Participants from diverse backgrounds including government officials, industry experts, startups, developers, and ecosystem stakeholders convened to explore the challenges, opportunities, and prospects of DeepTech in Africa. The event commenced with opening remarks from esteemed government officials and representatives from Intel and AfriLabs. Dr. Bienvenu Agbokponto Soglo, Director of Government Affairs Africa and IGA CTO Liaison at Intel set the stage with an insightful presentation on the socio-economic and policy implications of DeepTech in Africa. This was followed by a thought-provoking panel discussion featuring high-level representatives from the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Intel, and other industry partners, moderated by Jennifer Okeke-Ojiudu, Senior Ecosystem Engagements Manager at AfriLabs. The session provided valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities facing the DeepTech ecosystem in Africa. Finally, day one culminated with a High-Level Roundtable Discussion on AI Policy, facilitated by Dr. Bienvenu Agbokponto Soglo of Intel, engaging the Director-General of the National Centre for Technology Management, other Government Officials and AI Ecosystem Stakeholders. Day two of the event focused on empowering startups, developers, and innovation hubs with the tools and resources needed to thrive in the AI landscape. Highlights included an introduction to the Intel® Liftoff for AI Startups Program, presentations on the Intel Developer Cloud and OneAPI initiative, and valuable lessons learned from industry experts. The day concluded with presentations from leading innovation hubs, further enriching the discourse on DeepTech entrepreneurship and innovation in Nigeria. The final day of the event centered on building vibrant startup communities and fostering collaboration among ecosystem stakeholders. Keynote addresses by notable figures such as Ajibola Odukoya, Chief Operating Officer at AfriLabs, and Dr. Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, Director-General of NITDA, set the tone for engaging discussions on the role of government in driving innovation in Africa. Presentations from various innovation hubs underscored the importance of community-building and collaboration in nurturing Africa’s burgeoning DeepTech ecosystem. Dr. Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, Director-General of NITDA, emphasized the importance of collaboration and shared vision in his address: “When I learned of the aims and objectives of this workshop, my enthusiasm for our ecosystem was truly ignited. At NITDA, we firmly believe that no single entity can navigate this landscape alone; collective effort is imperative. Our vision for Nigeria is one of digital empowerment, innovation-driven prosperity, and inclusive economic growth fostered by technology. AfriLabs and Intel host early-stage deep-tech investors’ roundtable in Kenya
On the 27th and 28th of July 2022, Intel in partnership with AfriLabs and African Business Angel Network held discussions on Early-Stage Deep-Tech Investing across Africa in Nairobi, Kenya. It was an interactive hybrid event involving a diverse group of early-stage investors in deep-tech who shared insights and learnings within the African context. The session provided a deep dive into the pillars of the transformation and the emergence of Deep Tech in Africa, and discussions focused on the importance and role of the Deep Tech sector in economic development. The sessions also interrogated the role early-stage funding plays in this sector. In attendance across the 2-days event was Dr Bienvenu Agbokponto Soglo, Director, Government Affairs Africa and IGA CTO Liaison (PE), Intel Corporation, Nekesa Were, Director of Strategy AfriLabs, Snehar Shah, CEO, Moringa School, Tim Dagori, Board Member Association of Startup and SME Enablers of Kenya, Philip Thigo, Senior Director for Africa, Thunderbird School of Global Management, H.E. This is why partnerships like the one we have with Intel matter.” “Supporting digital entrepreneurship and tech start-ups in Kenya means bringing down barriers through the entire ecosystem, including those related to connectivity, payment systems, data protection, financial inclusion, and logistics. This is why entrepreneurs and female founders need comprehensive support structures that provide them with capacity building, affordable credit, and facilitated access to new markets.” H.E. Thomas Wimmer, Acting Ambassador to Kenya, the Federal Republic of Germany on why support for deep-tech startups in Kenya and Africa is relevant. “According to the World Bank, deep tech companies bring transformative technology from the lab to the market in addition to democratised research infrastructure. Increased available funding has led to the rise of deep-tech companies globally, including in emerging markets and Africa, Kenya to be specific should follow suit.” Ms. Maureen Mbaka, Chief Administrative Secretary at the Ministry of ICT, Innovation and Youth Affairs, Republic of Kenya also commented on why understanding how to support deep-tech startups is important. She also congratulated AfriLabs and Intel on their partnership. Intel and AfriLabs collaborate to support the African Deep Tech Startup Ecosystem
AfriLabs is excited to announce that we have partnered with the global manufacturer of advanced integrated digital technology platforms, Intel to gain a deeper understanding of the African deep-tech startup ecosystem and identify pathways in which Intel can extend their support to deep tech startups on the continent. The startup scene in Africa has experienced incredible growth in recent years, and this is partly a result of several significant interventions by stakeholders to enable entrepreneurship and innovation in local ecosystems. AfriLabs and Intel’s collaboration hopes to sustainably build on the work done and set a framework for future interventions. “To give more impactful support to the startup ecosystem in Africa, we need to consider specialised capacity building. Different kinds of startups need different kinds of support, and the AfriLabs partnership with Intel explores learning more about how we could better support deep tech ventures.
