Dr. Hany Elsalamony

Name: Dr. Hany Elsalamony

Name of Hub: Enroot Development

Why are you interested in being on the Board of AfriLabs?

  • I have dedicated my career to building entrepreneurial ecosystems where young innovators can access the resources, mentorship, and markets they need to thrive. Through my leadership at Enroot, I have worked directly with hubs, incubators, and youth-led enterprises across Africa and the MENA region, helping them design sustainable business models, access funding, and expand their reach. As Enroot is part of the AfriLabs network, I have gained first-hand insight into the value AfriLabs brings to its members, from fostering collaboration among hubs to driving continental advocacy for innovation. AfriLabs’ mission to empower innovation hubs and strengthen Africa’s knowledge economy aligns fully with my experience in ecosystem mapping, capacity building, and policy advocacy for entrepreneurship. Serving on the Board would allow me to amplify these efforts at a continental level, working alongside peers to scale support for young entrepreneurs in both thriving and underserved regions.

What are your current organizational affiliations?

  • I am the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at Enroot Development, where I lead programs that support entrepreneurship ecosystems, youth-led enterprises, and innovation hubs in Egypt and the wider region. My work includes developing strategies for hub capacity strengthening, designing various support programs for SMEs and start-ups, and facilitating market linkages for youth entrepreneurs.

What are some of your prior/current Board Leadership experiences?

I have held leadership and governance roles in multi-country initiatives.

At Enroot, as a Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer, I have overseen multi-stakeholder advisory committees for programmes strengthening innovation hubs, entrepreneurship ecosystems, and youth-led enterprises. This included chairing strategic planning sessions for the Entrepreneurship Strategy for Enroot, where we brought together hub managers, youth representatives, and ecosystem actors to define long-term priorities for supporting entrepreneurs in both urban and rural contexts.

I have also provided governance oversight and strategic guidance in regional projects, such as the cross-border sector selection for Lebanon, Jordan, and Syria, which identified high-growth industries for youth entrepreneurship and guided the development of targeted incubation and acceleration pathways. Additionally, I have led steering committees for donor-funded programmes supporting agripreneurship incubation in fragile and conflict-affected areas, ensuring alignment between funder priorities, hub capabilities, and youth needs.

These experiences required the same skills essential for an AfriLabs Board role, strategic decision-making, financial oversight, stakeholder consensus-building, and ensuring that the voices of entrepreneurs, especially youth and women, are embedded in governance processes.

What skills, connections, experiences, resources, and expertise do you have to offer and are willing to use on AfriLabs behalf?

  • I offer a combination of technical expertise, networks, and resources that can directly advance AfriLabs’ mission. My experience spans ecosystem mapping, incubation programme design, and capacity-building for hubs and youth enterprises, including leading conflict-sensitive Market Systems Assessments that uncovered entrepreneurship opportunities in fragile and underserved areas.

I have built extensive networks with innovation hubs, accelerators, and youth-focused organizations across Africa and the MENA region, as well as with international development partners that fund and strengthen these ecosystems.

Throughout my career, I have successfully connected entrepreneurs to growth pathways- from linking rural agri-tech start-ups with urban innovation spaces to facilitating cross-border trade partnerships for young founders.

Through Enroot’s strategic partnerships, I also bring access to tangible resources, ranging from specialized training modules for innovation hubs to research and insights on youth entrepreneurship trends.

What motivates you as an individual?

  • I am driven by the transformative power of entrepreneurship for young people, not only as a path to income, but to lead change in their communities. I have seen first-hand how a young entrepreneur, given the right support from a hub or incubator, can create solutions for local challenges and inspire peers. This belief has guided my work in strengthening ecosystems so that more youth can access the networks, skills, and confidence they need to succeed.

What fundraising experience do you have?

  • I have a strong track record of mobilizing funding for entrepreneurship and youth empowerment programmes by combining strategic relationship-building with compelling, evidence-based investment cases. For example, I secured multi-country programme funding to strengthen innovation hubs and connect youth-led SMEs to regional and cross-border markets in Lebanon, Jordan, and Syria, unlocking opportunities for over 150 young founders. I have co-designed competitive proposals with innovation hubs that resulted in direct donor grants for training, incubation, and acceleration initiatives, including sector-specific programmes in agritech and creative industries.

  • My fundraising efforts have successfully engaged major international development partners such as the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the World Bank (WB), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the DROSOS Foundation, and the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. In fragile and conflict-affected settings, I have persuaded these and other entities to invest in youth-focused entrepreneurship ecosystems by presenting data-driven insights from market systems research alongside powerful narratives from young entrepreneurs themselves. This approach not only attracts resources but also ensures investments are strategically aligned with the real needs of hubs, start-ups, and youth enterprises.

What would you like to gain from your participation on the Board of AfriLabs?

  • I see an AfriLabs Board role as an opportunity to both contribute and grow within Africa’s most influential innovation network. I want to deepen collaboration with peers who are equally committed to strengthening the capacity, sustainability, and impact of hubs across the continent. I aim to exchange tested strategies for ensuring long-term hub viability, drawing on diverse models from both stable and fragile contexts, and to co-create new approaches for supporting youth entrepreneurship in underserved regions, including rural and conflict-affected areas.

  • I am also keen to expand my engagement in AfriLabs’ policy and advocacy work, particularly around creating enabling environments for start-ups, improving access to finance for young founders, and integrating innovation into national development strategies. By working alongside fellow Board members, I hope to sharpen my own leadership in African ecosystem governance, broaden my exposure to cutting-edge hub practices, and contribute meaningfully to shaping the future of Africa’s innovation landscape.

Fun fact about yourself?

  • I have a unique passion for media and public dialogue. Over the years, I’ve written numerous articles, contributed opinion pieces to newspapers, and been invited to speak on TV programmes to discuss entrepreneurship, youth empowerment, and innovation. These platforms have allowed me to connect with diverse audiences, spark debate on public issues, and share stories that inspire action.
