AfriLabs Learning Week

Overview

The AfriLabs Hubs Learning Week took place from the 28th of August to the 1st of September 2017 and it comprised of 5 capacity building virtual workshops in the form of webinars for hub managers.

The Learning Week was not limited to Hub managers alone. Other key members of the ecosystem; Government, Developmental organizations, Venture capitalists and Angel Investors were part of the sessions. It was a chance to learn more about hub management, technology and innovation centers in Africa and the opportunities they present.

Each session began at 11AM – 12PM GMT daily from the 28th of August to the 1st of September 2017.

Uganda

Topic – Business Incubation Models (28th August)

Barbara is a Ugandan Social Entrepreneur, Technologist, social business management consultant, mentor, teacher and investor. She is the Executive Director and co-founder of Hive Colab in Uganda an innovation hub, business accelerator and incubator for East African technology Startups and whose mission is to build local tech capacity and scale up ideas with positive social and economic returns.

Jumanne Mtambalike

CEO, Sahara Ventures .

Tanzania

Topic– Financing a Business Incubator (29th August) 

Jumanne Mtambalike has been working in the African Innovation Ecosystem for the past seven years as a techie, entrepreneur, hub manager and now a founder of three companies one of them being a startup accelerator. He manages Sahara Sparks, Sahara Consulting, and Sahara Accelerator. He was formerly the Hub Manager of Buni Hub, Tanzania.

Bernard Chiira

Incubation Manager, iBizAfrica,

Strathmore University Kenya

Topic– Implementing a Mentoring Programme (30th August) 

Bernard Chiira is the Incubator Manager at Strathmore University’s @iBizAfrica in Nairobi Kenya with reputable experience in general incubator management, Startup incubation and acceleration, project management, digital marketing and research. He is passionate about innovation, mentorship and supporting entrepreneurs to succeed.

Patrick Kadama

Project Manager, Strategic Partnerships and Innovation NFT Mawazo,

Uganda

Topic– Marketing and Stakeholder Management(31st August) 

Patrick Kadama is the Project Manager and is in charge of Strategic Partnerships and Innovation at NFT Mawazo Hub in Uganda. He has a B.Eng Electronic Engineering and Cybernetics. He has been an integral part of growing the NFT hub from a cost center to a revenue center in 2 years. He is ABII Incubator certified and has an International year project management experience With the ICT trade center

Lukonga Lindunda

Executive Director, BongoHive.

Zambia

Topic– Monitoring, Evaluation and BenchMarking (1st September): 

Lukonga Lindunda is Co-founder and Executive Director of BongoHive, the first ever technology and innovation hub in Zambia which has serviced over 400 Startups since January 2016. He has led BongoHive in diversifying revenue streams by setting up BongoHive Consult (Tech Consulting Unit) and BongoHive Ventures (Investment Fund). Startups that have gone through BongoHive’s programs have raised up to $500K and the hub also has 52.5% Female participation in activities and programs.
